A day at a fan meeting as a non-Korean speaker
What the interpreter covered, what she did not, and the moment the language stopped mattering.
I speak about twenty words of Korean. Here is how a full fan meeting day went with an interpreter on stage and none in the queue.
The queue
Nobody translated the announcements outside, but the fan next to me typed them into her phone and showed me. Do not be shy about asking; every fan I met had been the new one once.
The interpreter
She translated the talk segment sentence by sentence and read the English fan questions aloud. She did not translate the games, which was fine, because the games were about who could hold a pose the longest.
The moment
During the last song the whole hall sang the chorus and I realised I had learned it without noticing. That is the moment the language stopped mattering.
