Jinju’s Lantern Festival Runs Until October 18: The Two Closing Times Travelers Should Know
Lanterns stay lit until midnight, but bridges and booths close earlier. Plan a Namgang evening with the correct hours, a realistic route and a separate journey home.
Jinju’s Namgang Yudeung Festival continues through October 18, 2026, around Jinjuseong Fortress and the Namgang River. For overseas visitors, the most useful planning detail is a distinction hidden by the simple phrase “night festival”: the organizer lists lantern lighting from 6 p.m. to midnight, while bridges and booths operate from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. All times are Korea Standard Time, UTC+9. Official exhibition information.
That one-hour difference matters. A late photograph of illuminated lanterns does not mean every crossing or activity is still open. Plan your route back before the earlier closing time rather than relying on the lights as a signal that the full site remains operational.
Follow the river, with a specific starting point
The Korea Tourism Organization gives the festival address as 626 Namgang-ro, Jinju, and lists admission as free. Its program overview includes floating and land-based lantern displays, plus drone and water-fireworks shows. The listing does not establish that those special shows happen every evening. Check the organizer’s current program before choosing a date around one particular spectacle. VISITKOREA’s festival listing.
For a first visit, the organizer’s suggested routes provide a more concrete starting point than a generic riverfront map. One route connects the fortress’s west gate, Hoguksa Temple, Jinju National Museum and Chokseongnu Pavilion before continuing toward the history park. Treat that as an orientation tool, not a guarantee that every indoor attraction follows festival hours.
A landscape with a wartime history
The lantern tradition is connected to the battles at Jinjuseong during the Japanese invasions of the late sixteenth century. VISITKOREA explains that floating lights were used for military communication and for messages between people inside and outside the fortress. The modern festival also carries hopes for peace and well-being. Knowing that background gives the riverside setting a meaning beyond a colorful photo stop.
Make the return journey part of the plan
Choose your departure time before deciding how late to stay. Use the official transport-information page alongside your actual rail, bus or accommodation booking; midnight illumination should never be treated as evidence of midnight public transport.
Keep some flexibility for weather, queues and on-site routing. If traveling with friends, agree on a recognizable meeting point and save the address offline. Visitors with mobility requirements should check the suitability of the exact route rather than assume every temporary crossing is equivalent.
Finally, distinguish free festival admission from any optional paid activity or transport. No specific paid bridge product or ticket availability is confirmed here. Check the organizer before paying a third-party seller, and keep the October 18 end date in mind when planning the next weekend.
