One week of convenience-store dinners, rated by a chef friend
Seven nights, seven meals under 8,000 won, and a chef scoring each one on the microwave rule.
A chef friend agreed to eat convenience-store dinners with me for a week and score them. The rule: anything that needs more than the store microwave is disqualified.
The winners
- Triangle kimbap and a cup of instant soup. Score 8. "Correct balance, no notes."
- Chilled bibim noodles. Score 8. "The sauce is doing the work and it knows it."
- The lunchbox with the egg roll. Score 7. "Better than airline food, worse than the lunchbox from the corner shop."
The losers
- The pasta. Score 3. "The sauce and the pasta have never met."
- The hot dog. Score 4. "It is fine. Fine is the problem."
The verdict
Seven dinners, total 49,000 won, average score six. Her advice: stick to rice and noodles, and buy the fruit cup, because nothing else green is going to happen this week.
