Ad Policy

Effective date:

Advertising pays for running K-LIFE, and readers must always be able to tell advertising from editorial content. This policy applies to every ad on the site and in the newsletter.

1. Ads are always labelled

Every ad carries an "Advertisement" label and names who placed it. Ads are never presented as editorial recommendations, and we do not reward clicks on ads.

2. Where ads can appear

Placements are fixed and limited:

  • Home: one banner within the latest list and one banner in the sidebar on wide screens. The sidebar banner is not shown on small screens.
  • Story, top: one platform ad before the headline.
  • Story, middle: at most one ad between paragraphs, only in long stories with at least three paragraphs before and after it.
  • Story, bottom: one ad chosen by the writer, after the text, sources and author note.
  • Newsletter: one below the lead story and one below the story list. Platform ads only; when there is none, an advertising enquiry note takes the place.

3. Platform ads and writer ads

Platform ads are sold and approved by K-LIFE. Writer ads belong to the writer; a writer needs separate permission to place ads, and each creative is reviewed before it runs.

An unused writer placement stays empty. We do not fill it with a platform or network ad. If a writer’s permission is withdrawn, their ads stop in every language.

4. Disclosure of economic relationships

When a writer earns from a link, promotes their own business, is paid by a sponsor or received something for free, the story says so below the headline and again next to the ad. The disclosure is written as text, never only inside an image.

5. Language and region

An ad runs only on pages in the language it was approved for. We do not show a Korean-only banner on an English story, or the reverse. Ads limited to certain countries are not shown when we cannot tell the reader’s country.

6. Order of priority and Google ads

In a platform placement a directly sold ad comes first, then Google advertising where it is configured and permitted, otherwise the placement is left out. Paid and affiliate links carry rel="sponsored".

Google ads are loaded only after the consent message required for the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland is in place. Consent and cookie choices are described in the Privacy Policy and can be changed from the settings link at the bottom of the page.

7. Reporting an ad

If an ad is misleading, unsafe or missing its disclosure, contact us with the page address. We can pause an ad while it is reviewed.
